Important Notes for World of Warcraft

This guide covers critical warnings, pitfalls, irreversible choices, missable content, difficulty spikes, grinding traps, online etiquette, anti-cheat notes, save management advice, and things players commonly regret not knowing earlier. 1. Irreversible or Costly Character Choices

Alliance vs. Horde: This choice is not irreversible but changing faction requires purchasing a Faction Change service from Blizzard ($30 USD per character). You cannot directly interact, trade, or join the same guild as the opposing faction. Choose wisely based on your friends’ faction or preferred racial abilities for your class.

Race Change: Similarly, race can be changed via paid service ($25 USD). Racial bonuses are often minor but can matter in high-end content (e.g., Human’s reputation bonus for PvE, Orc’s stun resistance for PvP).

Death Knight & Demon Hunter Starting Zones: These hero classes have special starting experiences that are unique and never replayable for that character. Ensure you are ready to commit before creating them.

Class: There is no class change in WoW. You must level a new character. Some classes have multiple roles (tank, healer, DPS) but you cannot convert a Mage to a Paladin.

Talents (Retail WoW – Dragonflight & War Within): Talent points can be freely respecced at any rest area (inn, capital city) for a small gold fee, or with a Tome of the Tranquil Mind (crafted by Inscription). There is no permanent lock-in.

Talents (Classic WoW – Classic, TBC, Wrath Classic): Respeccing costs increasing gold (up to 50g max) each time. This can become very expensive quickly. Plan your build carefully to avoid wasting gold.

Names are unique per realm. If you delete a character, the name is immediately available for anyone to take. You cannot “reserve” a name once the character is deleted. Avoid deleting high-level or sentimental characters unless you are certain.

2. Missable Content & Time-Limited Events

Holiday Events: Achievements, pets, mounts, and cosmetic items tied to events like Midsummer Fire Festival (June), Hallow’s End (October), Brewfest (September), and Love is in the Air (February) are only available during those weeks each year. Some require daily quests over multiple days. Missing a year means waiting until next year.

Seasonal PvP Mounts & Titles: Gladiator mounts and seasonal PvP titles (e.g., “Gladiator: Wrath of the Lich King”) are never obtainable again after the season ends. Only elite PvP sets can be bought years later for marks, but the current season’s set is exclusive.

Expansion Pre-Patch Events: Before each new expansion, Blizzard runs a pre-patch event with unique questlines, items, and achievements. Once the expansion launches, these become unobtainable (e.g., Battle for Azeroth pre-patch gave an exclusive pet and achievement).

Phased Zone Quests: Some quests (especially in Cataclysm zones, Draenor, or Mechagon) change the zone state. If you abandon a quest, you may need to reset the phase by grouping with someone on the same step or using an NPC. Rarely, you can permanently lose access to a quest if you complete another that forces phase change. Check Wowhead comments before doing multiple quests in the same area.

Heirloom & Toy Collecting: Many toys, heirlooms, and battle pets from old world content (e.g., Argent Tournament, Darkmoon Faire) are still available but may require long grinds. However, items from pre-Cata zones (like the Timbermaw Hold bear form for Druids) are still obtainable but require reputation farming.

3. Difficulty Spikes

Classic WoW: Leveling is slow and dangerous. Mobs hit hard, especially in zones like Duskwood (Undead) or Stranglethorn Vale (Goretusk). Avoid pulling more than 2 mobs unless you are a pet class. Stick to green/even con quests.

Retail WoW Leveling: Very fast and forgiving. But after reaching level cap, Mythic+ dungeons and Raids require coordinated group play, addons, and knowledge of mechanics. The jump from normal to Heroic difficulty is moderate; from Heroic to Mythic is severe.

Proving Grounds: For roles like healer and tank, you must complete a certain Proving Grounds rank (Silver in BfA, now removed but similar tests exist). Failure means you cannot queue for certain content. Practice in the Training Dummy or low-level dungeons first.

End-game Bosses like Kil’jaeden (Legion), Jaina Proudmoore (Battle for Azeroth), or Sylvanas (Shadowlands) have complex phases, overlapping abilities, and wipe mechanics. Bring Deadly Boss Mods (DBM) or BigWigs addon and read a boss guide before entering.

Timer Challenges: Mythic+ keystones have a timer; failing to beat it still gives loot but downgrades the keystone. The timer is tight on some affix weeks (Fortified + Tyrannical).

4. Grinding Traps – Avoid Wasting Time

Not all reputations are worth maxing. Check Wowhead’s reputation guide for which ones offer useful rewards (mounts, recipes, enchantments). For example, Argussian Reach (Legion) gives a void elf unlock but is time-gated. The Wardens gives a toy but no essential gear.

Avoid grinding old-world reputations for tabards unless you want them for collecting. New max-level content typically offers better rewards.

Farming old raids (like Tempest Keep for Ashes of Al’ar, Invincible from ICC) has a very low drop rate (often 1% or less). Do not expect to get the mount in less than 50–100 runs. Use multiple characters to increase weekly attempts.

Transmog farming: Many appearances come from quests that are now impossible (removed content). Before farming a specific item, verify on Simple Armory or MogIt addon that it is still obtainable. Some items were deactivated.

The fastest way to level alts is to use heirloom gear (which scales with level) and experience potions (e.g., 10% or 20% from Darkmoon Faire or Garrison). Purchase heirlooms with gold from vendors in Undercity or Ironforge. Heirlooms also grant a 5-10% XP boost.

DO NOT waste gold on gear upgrades while leveling; heirlooms and quest rewards are sufficient. Save gold for mounts, bags, and end-game consumables.

5. Online Etiquette & Anti-Cheat Notes

Be respectful in random groups: say “hi,” acknowledge mistakes, and don’t rage-quit. Tanks and healers are often in short supply; if you fill that role, be patient with DPS.

Loot Rules: In dungeon finder, loot is personal (each player rolls on their own). In premade groups, clarify Master Looter vs Group Loot before the run. Greed on items you need for off-spec, but do not Need on items for vendor or disenchantment unless allowed.

Allowed Addons: Any addon that reads game UI elements is fine. Botting (automated play) is strictly forbidden and results in a permanent ban. Avoid “auto-dodge” or “auto-interrupt” scripts.

Third-Party Programs: Using hardware macros that send multiple keypresses per second (rapid-fire) or automate fishing (like FishingBuddy’s automated cast) can trigger anti-cheat. Blizzard’s policy: one action per keypress. Violation may lead to suspension.

Streaming & Naming: Do not harass others, use slurs, or threaten. Blizzard enforces a strict Code of Conduct. Reports are taken seriously; you can be silenced, suspended, or banned.

6. Save Management & Account Security

All character data, progress, and inventory are stored on Blizzard servers. There is no backup you can create. The only way to “reset” progress is to delete a character (irreversible) or contact support for restoration (very rare for major issues).

Battle.net Account Recovery: If your account is hacked, Blizzard can restore items and characters, but it may take days. Enable SMS Protect and Authenticator (via Battle.net mobile app) to prevent unauthorized access. Never share your password.

If you transfer a character to another realm, the original realm character is deleted. The name becomes available immediately on the source realm. If you later want that name on a new character, you may find it taken.

Faction Change works similarly: you get a free name change if your name is taken on the new faction. Plan accordingly.

7. Things Players Commonly Regret Not Knowing Earlier

8. Final Warnings

Account Sharing: Blizzard forbids account sharing except for family members under certain conditions. If detected, your account may be suspended. Protect your account.

Phishing Scams: Never click links claiming to give free mounts or gold. Blizzard will never ask for your password in-game. Report whispers with suspicious links.

Gold Buying: Purchasing gold from third-party sites is against the Terms of Service. You risk account closure and loss of all progress.

Expansion Licensing: You must purchase the latest expansion (currently World of Warcraft: The War Within) to access max-level content. The base game includes all previous expansions (levels 1-70). Do not overbuy editions unless you want extras like boosts or mounts.
