Cheats & Secrets

Fallout 4: Cheats & Secrets Guide

This guide covers all known cheat codes, console commands, secrets, Easter eggs, and hidden content in Fallout 4. The game does not feature traditional in-game cheat codes (like typing a phrase to unlock items), but on PC you can use the developer console to execute a wide range of commands. Console players have limited options via mods and exploits. Easter eggs and hidden content are abundant.

PC Console Commands (Official Cheats)

To enable the console on PC, press the ~ key (tilde) while in-game. Commands are not case-sensitive. Warning: Using console commands may disable achievements until you restart the game (unless you use a mod that re-enables them).

  • Platform-Specific Notes

  • PC: Full console support (as above). Achievements disabled after using console (mods like "Achievement Enabler" exist).

  • PlayStation 4 / Xbox One: No official console. Cheats are only possible via mods (e.g., "Cheat Terminal" mod from the in-game mod browser). These disable achievements. Exploits (e.g., infinite caps via item duplication) work but are patched in later versions.

  • PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X|S: Backward compatible with PS4/XB1 versions; same limitations.

  • Exploits and Glitches (Unofficial Secrets)

These are bugs intentionally left in by developers or not fixed. Use at your own risk; can corrupt saves.
  • Infinite Caps via Water Purification: Build industrial water purifiers at settlements (e.g., Sanctuary) and collect purified water from the workshop repeatedly. Each sell for 15 caps. No mods needed.

  • Dogmeat Item Duplication Glitch (patched in 1.4): Command Dogmeat to pick up an item, then quickly grab it yourself – duplicates. Still works in some unpatched versions.

  • Laser Musket Infinite Ammo: Fire the musket while quickly switching weapons – ammo count doesn't decrease. Patched in later updates.

  • Settlement Budget Exploit: Drop weapons from inventory into workshop, then scrap them – return materials but budget count decreases, allowing more building.

  • Easter Eggs & Hidden Secrets

Bethesda filled Fallout 4 with pop culture references, developer jokes, and hidden lore.

    #### Iconic Easter Eggs
  • Mysterious Stranger Refrences: The perk "Mysterious Stranger" can appear randomly. There's also a skeleton in a refrigerator (Indian Jones reference) east of Sanctuary Hills. The fridge is a small shack with a skeleton inside.

  • UFO Crash Site: Southwest of the map, near the coast of the Glowing Sea, you can find a crashed alien spacecraft with an Alien Blaster and dead alien. Reference to Fallout 3's alien encounters.

  • Danse's Secret: If you complete the Brotherhood of Steel questline, Danse reveals he is a synth – a possible shocker.

  • Red Menace: In the Sentinel Site, you can find a poster of a communist Mirelurk – reference to Cold War propaganda.

  • The Jersey Devil: In the Northeast, a ghoulified creature called "The Jersey Devil" can be found. Reference to the cryptid.

  • Zetan Aliens: The quest "The Secret of Cabot House" involves alien technology. Also, a crashed Zetan ship near Fort Hagen.

  • Skyrim Easter Egg: In the Memory Den, you can find a book titled "The Lusty Argonian Maid" (from The Elder Scrolls). Also, an NPC named "M'aiq the Liar" appears randomly – a Skyrim reference.

  • Monty Python Reference: In the Castle, there's a skeleton with a sign that says "I'm not dead yet" – from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
