First Launch Setup
PC
1. On first launch, you may see a Shader Compilation window. This is normal and takes 10–20 minutes (CPU-dependent). Do not close the game during this process.
2. After compilation, the game will present the Main Menu.
3. Go to Settings > Graphics to adjust resolution, quality presets, upscaling (DLSS/FSR), etc.
4. Recommended settings for balanced performance: Original (not Enhanced) for most GPUs, or High for RTX 2060-class and above.
5. Input: The game supports keyboard/mouse and controllers (Xbox, DualShock, DualSense). If using a PlayStation controller, enable PlayStation Controller Support in Steam’s controller settings or use DS4Windows on Epic.
6. HDR: Accessible in Video settings if your display supports it. Calibrate brightness as prompted.
PlayStation
1. Launch the game from the home screen.
2. The first boot may show a “Saving…” message while initializing save data.
3. Adjust Display and Audio settings from the in-game menu.
4. If playing on PS5, the Performance Mode (target 60fps) is recommended. Go to Settings > Graphics > Performance/Resolution Mode and select Performance.
5. Controller: DualShock 4 or DualSense works natively. The DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are partially supported (no advanced PS5 features).

Common Installation Errors & Fixes
PC (Steam / Epic)
| Error / Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Shader compilation stuck or crashes | CPU insufficient or Windows install issue | Restart PC and run the game again. Ensure Windows is updated. If still stuck, verify game files (Steam: right-click > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity; Epic: Library > three dots > Verify). |
| “Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime required” | Missing VC++ redistributable | Install from [Microsoft](https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe) (x64) for both 2015-2022. Restart PC. |
| “GPU driver not compatible” | Outdated or corrupted drivers | Update GPU drivers from NVIDIA/AMD website. For NVIDIA, use GeForce Experience or download from [nvidia.com](https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx). For AMD, use Adrenalin or [amd.com](https://www.amd.com/en/support). |
| Low FPS / stuttering after launch | High settings or HDD causing streaming issues | Lower graphics settings to Medium/Original. Ensure game is on SSD. Disable Dynamic Resolution Scaling if enabled. |
| Game won’t start / black screen on launch | Conflicting overlays (Discord, Steam overlay) | Disable overlays temporarily. For Steam: right-click game > Properties > General > uncheck “Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game”. Also disable Discord overlay. |
| “DirectX 12 is not supported” | GPU does not support DirectX 12 or driver issue | Update GPU drivers. If GPU is pre-2015, use DirectX 11 mode (if available via launch options). Add `-dx11` in Steam launch options. |
| Download stuck at 0% or slow | Server congestion or network issue | Pause and resume download. Restart launcher. Change download region (Steam: Settings > Downloads > Download Region; Epic: Settings > Network > Throttle downloads). |
| Error code 0x80070005 (Epic) | Permission issue during installation | Run Epic Games Launcher as Administrator. Right-click launcher shortcut > Properties > Compatibility > “Run this program as an administrator”. |
| Cracked/illegitimate copies cause crashes | Pirated files are unstable | Only use legitimate copies from Steam or Epic. |
PlayStation
| Error / Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Cannot install” disc error | Dirty disc or damaged laser | Clean disc with soft cloth. Restart console. If persists, try safe mode > Rebuild Database. |
| Download stuck | Network issues or server maintenance | Check PSN status (support.playstation.com). Pause and resume download. Rebuild database: Settings > System > System Software > Rebuild Database. |
| “CE-30005-8” error on launch | Corrupted save or game data | Delete and reinstall game (not save data). Go to Settings > Storage > Game and Apps > delete God of War. Then reinstall. |
| Performance mode not showing on PS5 | Game not updated to latest patch | Check for updates: highlight game icon > Options > Check for Update. |
Post-Installation Verification
PC
1. Launch the game and confirm you reach the main menu without crashes.
2. Start a New Game and play for at least 5 minutes – check for unusual stuttering, texture pop-in, or audio glitches.
3. Verify file integrity via launcher if any issues arise.
4. Confirm that save files are being created (Steam Cloud / Epic Cloud may sync).
PlayStation
1. Launch the game to the main menu.
2. Start a New Game and let the intro sequence play – ensure no freezing or audio out-of-sync.

Additional Tips
- Steam users can enable Steam Input for better controller support (especially for DualSense and Switch Pro controllers). Go to Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings and enable PlayStation / Switch configuration support.
- Epic users may need to add the game as a non-Steam game to use Steam Input features.
- Modding: God of War (2018) on PC has limited mod support (mostly texture mods). Install via manual file replacement; always back up original files.
- Cloud Saves: Both Steam and Epic support cloud saves. PlayStation cloud saves are available with PS Plus.
- Disc vs. Digital on PS5: If you have the PS5 disc edition, prefer disc for potential resale; digital offers convenience.
