Download & Installation
Introduction
This guide covers the legal download and installation of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim across all major platforms. The most common modern release is Skyrim Special Edition (also known as Skyrim SE or Skyrim: Anniversary Edition after the free upgrade). The original 2011 release (Oldrim) is no longer sold new on most stores, but some keys may still exist. This guide focuses on the Special/Anniversary Edition.

Common Installation Errors & Fixes

| Skyrim SE not launching after install | Antivirus blocking executable | Add `SkyrimSE.exe` and `SkyrimSELauncher.exe` to antivirus exclusions. Also run as Administrator. |
| Steam “Missing file privileges” | Permission issue | Right‑click Steam > Run as Administrator, or reinstall to a non‑Program Files folder. |
| Epic Games “Installation Failed” | Corrupted cache or insufficient disk space | Clear Epic launcher cache (in settings). Ensure at least 20 GB free. |
| Xbox app “0x80073D02” | Corrupted Windows Store components | Run `wsreset.exe` or repair the Xbox app via Settings > Apps. |
| PlayStation “Cannot install” | Corrupted download or insufficient space | Delete and re‑download. Free up space (at least 20 GB). Restart console. |

| Game crashes on splash screen (PC) | Old mod files from previous install | Delete `Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition` folder (backup saves first). Verify game files (Steam: Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity; Epic: Manage > Verify). |
| Unable to link Bethesda.net on console | Account region mismatch or server down | Create Bethesda.net account on PC first, then log in on console. Try again later. |
Post-Installation Verification
1. Check game version: On PC, open the game and in the main menu lower left corner you will see the version number (e.g., 1.6.1170.0 for Anniversary). On console, version is usually displayed in System > Data Management.
2. Verify file integrity (PC):
- Steam: Right‑click game in Library > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Epic: Click the three dots on the game tile > Manage > Verify.
- Microsoft Store / Xbox app: Use the Settings app > Apps > Skyrim > Advanced Options > Repair / Reset.
3. Test basic functionality: Launch a new game, run around the starting area (Helgen), test controls, sound, and graphics. If no crashes occur, installation is successful.
4. Enable mods (optional): If you plan to mod, install a mod manager first and ensure the game launches vanilla without issues before adding mods.
5. Save a backup: After verifying, copy your save files (located in `Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/Saves` on PC) to an external drive or cloud.

Note: Skyrim is a single-player game; no online subscription is required to play the main campaign. Online features (mods, Creations) require internet access and an account.
