Core Gameplay Overview
Where's My Water? is a physics-based puzzle game where you guide water from a source to Swampy the Alligator's shower. The core loop involves manipulating terrain, activating objects, and overcoming obstacles using water, steam, and toxic ooze. Progression is linear through themed chapters, each introducing new mechanics.
Main Gameplay Loop
1. Select a Level from the chapter map.
2. Analyze the Puzzle – Observe the water source, obstacles, and Swampy's shower pipe.
3. Dig and Interact – Use touch gestures to dig dirt, flip switches, and trigger objects.
4. Guide Resources – Direct water, steam, or ooze to reach the pipe and collect three rubber ducks.
5. Complete Objectives – Fill Swampy's shower to 100% and collect all ducks for a three-duck rating.
6. Unlock Next Level – Earn enough ducks to progress; bonus levels require all ducks in a chapter.
Combat/Interaction Systems
There is no combat. Interaction is entirely puzzle-based:
- Digging: Swipe through dirt to create channels. Different soil types (hard, soft, coloured) affect speed.
- Switches/Valves: Tap to open/close water flow, redirect steam, or activate traps.
- Objects: Moveable blocks, water suckers, fans, etc., respond to touch or water pressure.
- Hazards: Toxic ooze (green) must be avoided; it poisons water if mixed. Acid dissolves certain obstacles.
- Steam: Hot water turns to steam; can be used to lift objects or power mechanisms.
- Chapters: 10 main chapters (each 20 levels) + 5 bonus chapters (e.g., "All Ducked Up", "The Flood" in later updates).
- Duck Stars: Each level awards 1–3 ducks based on how many of the three hidden ducks you collect. Collecting all ducks in a chapter unlocks the bonus level.
- Level Types: Standard (water only), Steam (water + steam), Ooze (toxic ooze introduced), Mix (all elements).
- Level Design: Each puzzle is a self-contained sandbox with hidden duck locations. No open world.
- Secrets: Ducks are placed in paths that require extra effort (e.g., diverting water away from main flow). Some require precise timing.
- Replayability: Levels can be replayed to improve duck count or find faster solutions.
- Level Objectives: Primary goal is to fill the shower. Secondary: collect three ducks per level.
- Chapter Goals: Complete all levels and collect all ducks to unlock bonus levels.
- No Side Quests: No NPCs or narrative branching. Story is linear – Swampy's quest for a clean shower, with other alligators (Cranky, Allie) appearing in later chapters.
- No Currency: The game does not use coins, gold, or premium items.
- Free vs Paid: Original version is paid ($0.99–$1.99). HD version may have ads or optional hints.
- Hints: In-game hint button (limited per level or unlimited in paid versions). No microtransactions in the classic version.
- No RPG elements: Swampy doesn't level up, gain skills, or change stats.
- Unlocks: New chapter mechanics (e.g., steam in Chapter 3, ooze in Chapter 5) are introduced as you progress. Essentially the "build" is your puzzle-solving skill.
- 100% Completion: Collect all ducks in all chapters (including bonus).
- Bonus Chapters: Often harder, with mixed elements and tighter timing.
- No New Game Plus: Once all chapters are completed, the game ends. Some versions include a level editor (Where's My Water? 2 on mobile had one, but original does not).
- What to Expect: Simple water physics. Only water is used. Dirt is easy to dig.
- Mechanics Introduced: Digging, switches, drains.
- Tips: Focus on understanding flow. Always watch the duck paths – often they require short diversions.
- Example Level 1-1: Tap to open valve, water flows down. Dig a trench to direct water to the pipe. Ducks are along the way.
- What to Expect: Steam and toxic ooze introduced. Puzzles require multiple steps.
- Mechanics Introduced: Steam (used to float objects, power fans), ooze (destroys certain blocks, poisons water if mixed).
- Tips: Learn to separate water and ooze. Use steam to redirect water upward. Prioritize duck collection over shower filling.
- Example Chapter 4: You must first turn water into steam to lift a block, then condense steam back to water by cooling it (using cold objects).
- What to Expect: All elements combined in complex layouts. Tight timing.
- Mechanics Introduced: Chains, moving platforms, timed switches.
- Tips: Plan your dig path before acting. Many puzzles require precise digging to avoid mixing elements.
- Example Level 8-15: Use ooze to destroy a barrier, then quickly switch to water before ooze reaches the shower.
- What to Expect: The hardest levels. Requires mastery of all mechanics.
- Example Levels: "The Flood" chapter – all water, but massive flow control. "All Ducked Up" – every duck is hidden in risky locations.
- Tips: Replay earlier levels to practice. Some endgame puzzles have only one solution; watch for hidden pipes (e.g., behind blocks).
- 100% Completion: After finishing all levels, you get a congratulations screen. No post-game content beyond replaying for personal bests.
