Characters & Roles

Characters & Roles

Overview

Pokémon GO does not feature traditional character classes or selectable heroes. Instead, you play as a Trainer who interacts with various NPCs (non-player characters) and catches, battles, and collects Pokémon. The primary 'characters' in the game are the NPCs that guide your journey, the Team Leaders that represent the three teams, and the Team GO Rocket members you fight. Additionally, your Pokémon themselves fill distinct combat roles (Attacker, Defender, etc.) that you must manage for Raids, Gyms, and PvP. This guide covers every major NPC and the essential roles your Pokémon can play.

---

1. The Trainer (You)

Background: You are a new Pokémon Trainer in the real world, recruited by Professor Willow to help him study Pokémon using the augmented reality device known as the "Pokédex". Your goal is to catch, evolve, and battle Pokémon while exploring the real world.

Strengths:
  • Fully customizable appearance (gender, outfit, accessories).

  • Can switch between three teams (Mystic, Valor, Instinct) but only once via Team Medallion.

  • Accumulates experience (XP) to level up, unlocking items, stronger spawns, and higher CP caps.

  • Weaknesses:
  • No direct combat abilities – influences battles only through items (e.g., Max Revives) and by choosing Pokémon.

  • Limited bag space unless upgraded.

  • Playstyle: Explore real-world locations, spin PokéStops for items, catch wild Pokémon, and participate in Raids and Gyms. The Trainer has no unique skills; progress is measured by level, medals, and collection.

Unlock Conditions: Available immediately upon account creation.

Recommended Equipment / Builds: Not applicable; instead, manage your inventory (Poké Balls, Potions, Berries, Evolution Items) and use Lucky Eggs for XP boosts, Star Pieces for Stardust, and Incense for spawn attraction.

Team Synergy: Your team choice (Mystic, Valor, Instinct) determines which Gym you can place defenders on and which Team Leaders you interact with for PvP and Special Research.

    2. Professor Willow

Background: A renowned Pokémon Professor who invented the device that allows you to catch Pokémon in the real world. He guides you through the initial tutorial and provides Special Research tasks.

    Strengths:
  • Offers global tasks (Field Research) with rewards.

  • Provides the first Starter Pokémon (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle).

  • Weaknesses:
  • Does not battle; purely a quest-giver.

  • Sometimes gives ambiguous objectives.

  • Playstyle: Interact with him through the Research menu. Complete his tasks to earn encounters, items, and eventually mythical Pokémon (like Mew, Celebi).

Unlock Conditions: Available immediately after tutorial.

    Recommended Equipment / Builds: N/A.

Team Synergy: Works equally with all teams.

    ---

    3. Team Leaders (Candela, Blanche, Spark)

Background: Each team has a charismatic leader who represents its philosophy:
  • Candela (Valor): Passionate about power and strength. Wears red.

  • Blanche (Mystic): Analytical and calm, values wisdom. Wears blue.

  • Spark (Instinct): Energetic and intuitive, trusts gut feelings. Wears yellow.

  • Strengths:
  • Offer Battle League practice battles (Great League, Ultra League, Master League).

  • Reward Stardust upon winning (first three wins per day per league).

  • Provide insight into your Pokémon's IVs (Individual Values) via the Appraisal feature.

  • Weaknesses:
  • Their teams have fixed lineups – you can learn patterns and counter them easily.

  • No significant impact on endgame content.

  • Playstyle: Fight them daily for Stardust and to test team compositions. Their Pokémon have set species and moves, so prepare counters (e.g., use Fighting-types against Candela's Fire/Fighting team; use Dark-types against Blanche's Water/Ice; use Ground-types against Spark's Electric).

Unlock Conditions: Available after reaching Trainer Level 5 and choosing a team.

Recommended Equipment / Builds: Use Pokémon that are super effective against their lead (e.g., Machamp vs Candela). No specific items required.

Team Synergy: You can only battle the leader of your own team. They are tied to your team choice.

    ---

    4. Team GO Rocket Leaders (Arlo, Cliff, Sierra)

Background: Members of Team GO Rocket – a villainous organization that has taken over PokéStops. They use Shadow Pokémon, which are stronger and have unique charged moves (Frustration). Defeating them allows you to capture their Shadow Pokémon.

    Strengths:
  • Give high-level Shadow Pokémon (some with great IVs) that can be purged for better stats.

  • Reward components for Super Rocket Radar (when defeated).

  • Weaknesses:
  • Their battles have shields (two shields) and use high CP Shadow Pokémon with fast moves.

  • Require specific counters; failure means losing revives and potions.

  • Playstyle: You encounter them after defeating six Team GO Rocket Grunts and assembling a Rocket Radar. Their lineup changes monthly. Each leader has a thematic type (e.g., Arlo: Bug/Steel; Cliff: Ground/Flying; Sierra: Dark/Psychic). You must beat three of their Pokémon in sequence, with the leader having a guaranteed final Pokémon (legendary or pseudo-legendary).

Unlock Conditions: Available after reaching Trainer Level 8? Actually, Team GO Rocket Grunts appear after Level 8, but Leaders require a Rocket Radar (Level 15+?). The Special Research "A Troubling Situation" unlocks participation.

Recommended Equipment / Builds: Prepare Pokémon that resist common moves from each leader. For example:
  • Against Arlo: Fire (for Bug/Steel), Fighting (for Normal/Steel).

  • Against Cliff: Water/Grass (for Ground/Rock), Ice (for Flying).

  • Against Sierra: Bug/Ghost (for Dark/Psychic).

  • Bring high DPS Pokémon with shields (Fast moves that charge fast). Use shields wisely.

Team Synergy: No team requirement – all trainers can fight any leader. However, your team choice influences the Super Radar encounter with Giovanni.

    ---

    5. Team GO Rocket Boss – Giovanni

Background: The leader of Team GO Rocket. He uses powerful Shadow Legendary Pokémon (currently Shadow Mewtwo, Shadow Groudon, etc., cycling). Defeating him is a major milestone.

    Strengths:
  • Rewards a rare Shadow Legendary (high IV chance) and often a Super Rocket Radar component.

  • Part of special research series.

  • Weaknesses:
  • Very difficult; his Pokémon have high CP and shields.

  • Requires a Super Rocket Radar (from defeating leaders).

  • Playstyle: Save strong Pokémon with fast charge moves. Giovanni's lineup includes Persian (Normal) followed by a Nidoqueen/King, then a Shadow Legendary. Use Fighting-types for Persian, then coverage moves for the second, and top counters (e.g., Dark/Ghost for Mewtwo) for the final.

Unlock Conditions: Must be at least Level 15 (typically) and have completed prior Team GO Rocket research.

Recommended Equipment / Builds: High-level Machamp, Tyranitar, or Melmetal. Use Charge TMs to optimize moves. Shields are critical – block his Charged Attacks when possible.

Team Synergy: Requires strong team coverage; no direct synergy with your chosen team.

    ---

    6. Gym Leaders (Recurring NPCs)

Background: Eight Gym Leaders from the main series appear in Special Research events (e.g., Kanto Tour, Go Fest). They are not permanent NPCs. Each specializes in a type.

    Strengths:
  • Provide rare encounters (e.g., Blaine’s Magmar) or evolution items.

  • Test your knowledge of type matchups.

  • Weaknesses:
  • Event-exclusive – missable.

  • Usually only one battle per event.

  • Playstyle: During events, you may face them in a battle similar to a Raid boss. Use type advantages to defeat them quickly.

Unlock Conditions: Only during specific events or special research lines (e.g., "A Mythical Discovery" includes Giovanni, not Gym Leaders per se).

Recommended Equipment / Builds: Case-by-case based on the leader's type.

Team Synergy: Not applicable as they are one-off encounters.

    7. Pokémon Roles (Classes)

Since Pokémon themselves are your main units, they fill different battle roles. Understanding these roles helps you build effective teams for Raids, Gyms, and PvP.

    #### a. Raid Attacker
Description: High DPS (damage per second) Pokémon used to defeat Raid Bosses quickly. They often have powerful STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus) moves. Example: Rayquaza (Dragon/Flying) with Dragon Tail + Outrage.

Strengths: Maximize damage to take down bosses before time runs out.
Weaknesses: Often low defense; may faint quickly.
Playstyle: Use in large groups; dodge charged attacks if possible.
Unlock: Catch strong wild Pokémon or hatch from eggs; requires high level (30+) and move optimization.
Recommended Builds: Use TMs to get the best moveset. Pair with weather boost.
Team Synergy: Combine with other attackers of same type for type effectiveness bonus (e.g., multiple Machamp vs Darkrai).

    #### b. Gym Defender
Description: Bulky Pokémon placed in Gyms to discourage attackers. High HP and defense, often with annoying moves. Example: Blissey (Normal) with Zen Headbutt + Dazzling Gleam.

Strengths: Time-consuming to defeat; can hold a Gym for hours.
Weaknesses: Low attack; defends by attrition.
Playstyle: Place after defeating a Gym; feed Berries remotely (Golden Razz) to keep motivation.
Unlock: Must have a Gym that belongs to your team; place Pokémon from your collection.
Recommended Builds: High HP and defense; avoid double weaknesses. Blissey, Chansey, Snorlax, Slaking, etc.
Team Synergy: Only one of each species per Gym; vary types to avoid mono-vulnerability.

    #### c. PvP Battler (Great/Ultra/Master League)
Description: Pokémon optimized for competitive PvP (GO Battle League). They need good IVs (especially low Attack in Great League for stat product), optimal moves (often with coverage), and appropriate CP caps. Example: Altaria (Dragon/Flying) in Great League with Dragon Breath + Sky Attack.

Strengths: Strategic baiting, shield management, and switch timing.
Weaknesses: Meta shifts; some Pokémon are outclassed.
Playstyle: Build a team of three that covers type weaknesses and resistances. Learn move counts.
Unlock: Level 10+ to access Battle League; requires 3 Pokémon per league.
Recommended Builds: Use PvP IVs (0/15/15 usually). Unlock second charged move. Use Elite TMs for legacy moves.
Team Synergy: Core types like Grass/Fire/Water or Steel/Fairy/Fighting. Common cores: Azumarill (Water/Fairy) + Registeel (Steel) + Altaria (Dragon/Flying) – the classic.

    #### d. Shadow Pokémon
Description: Pokémon corrupted by Team GO Rocket. They have a 20% attack boost and 20% defense reduction. Their exclusive charged move "Frustration" can be removed during certain events.

Strengths: Highest DPS potential in raids if used correctly.
Weaknesses: Lower defense, high stardust cost to power up, and cannot change Frustration easily.
Playstyle: Use as raid attackers; they die faster but deal more damage. Purifying (removing Frustration) makes them weaker but cheaper.
Unlock: Defeat Grunts and Leaders; encounter Shadow Pokémon.
Recommended Builds: For raiding, keep as Shadow and use second charged move. For PvP, purify if the IVs are good.
Team Synergy: They work best with type synergy; consider their glass cannon nature.

    #### e. Mega Evolution (Temporary Role)
Description: Certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve for a limited time, boosting their stats and granting a damage bonus to all allies in the same type (in raids).

Strengths: Huge CP boost, type-specific buff for group.
Weaknesses: Energy cost to Mega Evolve; only one Mega at a time.
Playstyle: Activate before a raid to help your party. Use Mega Charizard Y for Fire raids, etc.
Unlock: Collect Mega Energy by raiding or walking; initially requires 200 energy, then less.
Recommended Builds: Mega Evolve your strongest species; use it for raids where its type is super effective.
Team Synergy: Coordinate with other players to have one Mega of each type.

    ---

    8. Other Notable Characters

  • The Mysterious Professor (Willow): Already covered.

  • Pikachu with a cap: Various costumed Pikachus appear as wild encounters during events – no special role.

  • The Seven Colored Pokémon Smeargle: Appears via snapshot photobomb – no battles.

  • Meltan: Mythical Pokémon that evolves by feeding 400 Meltan Candy in the Mystery Box.

  • Celebi & Mew: Mythical Pokémon from Special Research – good for PvP or collection.

Summary

Pokémon GO’s character roster is minimal compared to traditional RPGs. The player Trainer is the main character, supported by Professor Willow and the three Team Leaders. Team GO Rocket adds adversarial characters with increasingly difficult battles. Your Pokémon are the real stars, and their roles – Attacker, Defender, PvP battler, Shadow, Mega – are the closest to character classes. Build your team around these roles to succeed in all game modes.
