Character Skills Guide for Escape from Tarkov



Introduction


Escape from Tarkov features a robust skill system that develops passively as you perform actions. There are no classes or character roles; all players (BEAR or USEC) share the same skill progression. Skills are divided into Physical, Combat, Mental, Practical, and Special categories. Each skill levels from 0 to 51 (Elite), granting increasingly powerful bonuses. Skills do not have cooldowns, spells, or active abilities; they are always active and improve through repeated use.

#### 1. Physical Skills
These govern movement, stamina, and raw physical capability.

  • Endurance

  • - Effect: Increases maximum stamina pool, stamina regeneration rate, and reduces stamina drain while sprinting and jumping.
    - Leveling: Running, sprinting, jumping, and walking long distances.
    - Elite Bonus: Infinite sprint (sprint does not drain stamina) and +50% stamina regen.
    - Synergies: Works with Strength to reduce overall stamina cost for heavy loads.
    - Recommendation: Prioritize in early wipe by always sprinting between cover. High Endurance lets you outlast opponents in chase or escape.

  • Strength

  • - Effect: Increases carrying capacity, throwing distance for grenades, melee damage, and reduces weapon ergonomics penalty from low stamina or being overweight.
    - Leveling: Carrying heavy loads (above 90% of capacity), sprinting while overweight, throwing grenades, and performing melee hits.
    - Elite Bonus: +50% melee damage, +25% grenade throw distance, and ability to jump while overweight.
    - Synergies: High Strength reduces stamina penalty from armor, allowing more aggressive movement.
    - Recommendation: Deliberately overpack your backpack while running to train Strength early. Essential for extract camping and carrying high-value loot.

  • Vitality

  • - Effect: Increases maximum health, reduces bleeding chance, improves healing speed, and lowers penalty from pain.

  • Assault Rifles (and other weapon-specific skills like SMG, Shotgun, DMR, Sniper, Pistol, Revolver)

  • - Effect: Increases weapon ergonomics, reduces recoil, improves aiming speed, and reduces weapon sway. Each weapon type has its own skill (e.g., Assault Rifles, SMGs, etc.).

  • Recoil Control

  • - Effect: Reduces overall recoil (horizontal and vertical) for all weapons.

    - Elite Bonus: +100% recoil control (massive reduction).
    - Synergies: Stack with weapon-specific skills for laser-like accuracy.

When to Use Each Skill


All skills are always active—they are passive. Use is automatic based on actions. However, you can deliberately adopt behaviors to train desired skills:
  • Early wipe: Sprint everywhere for Endurance; overpack for Strength; repair all weapons for Weapon Maintenance.

  • Mid wipe: Focus on economy skills (Charisma, Hideout Management) while maintaining combat skills.

  • Late wipe: Elite skills become game-changing; prioritize Endurance and Stress Resistance for raids with high tier gear.
