Cheats & Secrets

Cheats & Secrets Guide for Hollow Knight

No Official Cheat Codes

Hollow Knight does not include traditional cheat codes, unlock codes, or developer console commands. The game was designed without shortcuts or debug menus accessible to players. All hidden content is earned through exploration, puzzle-solving, and skill. This guide compiles every major legitimate secret, Easter egg, and developer-intended hidden feature.

Hidden Characters & Quests

#### The Grimm Troupe
  • How to trigger: After obtaining the Dream Nail, return to Howling Cliffs. Find a hidden corpse near the entrance to King's Pass and Dream Nail it to receive the Grimmchild charm.

  • Content: Collect flames throughout Hallownest to summon the Grimm Troupe and access new areas (the Tent, Nightmare Realm). Two endings: banish the Troupe or defeat Nightmare King Grimm (one of the hardest bosses).

  • #### Godseeker & The Pantheons
  • How to access: After obtaining the Dream Nail, go to the Royal Waterways and break a wall near the Jinn corpse to find the Godseeker. Use the Dream Nail on it to unlock the Godhome.

  • Content: Five pantheons of increasing difficulty, culminating in the Pantheon of Hallownest (true final boss). Defeating all pantheons unlocks the “Embrace the Void” ending.

  • #### The Hunter’s Journal Completion
  • Secret reward: Fill the entire Hunter’s Journal (all 163 entries including Dream Warriors and Godhome exclusive enemies). The Hunter gives you the “Hunter’s Mark” charm, but there is also a hidden dialogue and a secret achievement if you fully complete it before defeating the final boss.

  • #### The Last Stag
  • Secret dialogue: After rescuing all Stag Stations, ride the Stag to King’s Station and Dream Nail the Stag to reveal a hidden memory about the old Stag’s past.

    Secret Areas & Zones

    #### The Hive
  • Location: Deep in Kingdom’s Edge, accessible after defeating Hornet Sentinel and gaining the Monarch Wings. Break a hidden floor in the southeast part of the area.

  • Content: Boss fight against Hive Knight, collect Hiveblood charm, and discover lore about the Hive.

  • #### The White Palace
  • Location: Inside the Dream World, accessible via the corpse of the White Lady in the Queen’s Gardens (requires Awoken Dream Nail).

  • Content: Precision platforming sections, item: “White Fragment” (half of Kingsoul charm). Contains the “Path of Pain” optional super-challenge.

  • #### Path of Pain
  • Location: Inside the White Palace. Hidden entrance at the top-right of the large room with buzzsaws. Break a hidden wall.

  • Content: Extremely difficult platforming gauntlet. Rewards with a cutscene and the “Seal of Binding” achievement. No in-game item, but lore and bragging rights.

  • #### The Abyss
  • Final unlock: After obtaining both halves of the Kingsoul charm, return to the Abyss below the Cast-off Shell. The area opens to reveal the Birthplace of the Knight. This leads to the “Dream No More” ending and the ability to use Void Heart.

  • #### Colosseum of Fools – Trial of the Fool
  • Hidden difficulty: Beyond the three standard trials, there is no true secret boss, but defeating the Trial of the Fool rewards 11,000 Geo (post-game) and a secret achievement (“Neglect”).

    Easter Eggs & Developer References

    #### Bapanada
  • Dialogue: Speak to the Moss Knight in Queen’s Gardens (near the Moss Prophet) with the Dream Nail. The thought “Bapanada” appears—a nonsense word that became a meme in the community.

  • #### Menderbug
  • Hidden enemy: In the Fungal Wastes, there is a rare, one-time encounter with a bug named Menderbug. If killed with a specific method (using Dream Nail before it fades), you can get a Hunter’s Journal entry. Requires precise timing and luck.

  • #### Elderbug’s Hidden Dialogue
  • After completing certain tasks (e.g., obtaining all charms, completing the journal), talk to Elderbug in Dirtmouth. He will have unique dialogue referencing your journey.

  • #### The Godhome Graveyard
  • Easter egg: In Godhome, after unlocking all pantheons, a small grave appears near the entrance with the epitaph “Here lies a forgotten god.” If you Dream Nail it, it reveals a hidden memory of a deity that never became.

  • #### Lifeblood Door & Secret Room
  • Location: In the Abyss, after obtaining Void Heart, there is a door in the central chamber that requires 15 lifeblood masks. This leads to a room with a dead bug and a charm notches (not a charm). This is a developer reference to cut content (Lifeblood was a scrapped upgrade system).

  • #### Mr. Mushroom
  • Secret NPC: A sentient mushroom that appears in multiple areas after hitting it with the Dream Nail. If you interact with it in every location, it eventually travels to the Godhome and gives a unique dialogue about the game’s development.

  • #### The Azure Warrior
  • Hidden dream boss: In the Resting Grounds, Dream Nail the dream warrior in the crypt near the Ancestral Mound to fight the Azure Warrior—a rare dream warrior.

    Developer-Intended Hidden Mechanics

    #### Delicate Flower Quest
  • How to start: After obtaining the Dream Nail, talk to the Grey Mourner in the Resting Grounds (hidden room). Accept her flower delivery to the grave of her lover in the Queen’s Gardens.

  • Rewards: Complete the quest without taking damage (any hit breaks the flower) to get a special cutscene, the “Blessing of the Mourner” achievement, and the White Fragrant Flower charm (increases health drop rate). This is a deliberate test of patience and skill.

  • #### Nailmaster’s Glory & Nail Arts
  • Secret technique: In the Howling Cliffs, after obtaining the Nailmaster's Glory charm, you can double-tap attack to perform faster Nail Arts. Not a secret but often missed.

  • #### The “Void Heart” Charm
  • Final charm: Combining both halves of the Kingsoul charm in the Abyss produces the Void Heart charm. This item changes multiple endings and allows access to the final boss (The Radiance). It is the intended final upgrade and not a secret cutscene.

    Exploit-Safe Secrets & Interactions

    #### Using Fragile/Unbreakable Charms with Jiji
  • Interaction: If you break a Fragile charm, you can give Geo to Jiji in Dirtmouth (requires Simple Key) to retrieve it from the Stagways near the Hot Springs. This is an intended feature, not an exploit.

  • #### The Dreamshield & Dream Nail Interaction
  • If you hold down the Dream Nail button while Dreamshield is equipped, the shield will block projectiles while you focus. Not a secret but a useful synergy.

  • #### Jumping on Bouncy Mushrooms (Fungal Wastes)
  • You can pogo off enemies using down+slash. This is a core mechanic, but it can be used to skip some platforming challenges—intended by developers as a skill expression.

    Missable Content & Secrets

    #### The Soul Tyrant Dream Boss
  • After defeating Soul Master, return to the Soul Sanctum and Dream Nail the corpse in the audience chamber to fight the Soul Tyrant (optional dream boss). Required for 100% completion.

  • #### The Lost Kin Dream Boss
  • After defeating Broken Vessel, return to the Ancient Basin and Dream Nail the cocoon in the boss room to fight Lost Kin.

  • #### Grey Prince Zote
  • After rescuing Zote from the Vengefly King and completing his four encounters in the Colosseum of Fools, you can Dream Nail the Zote statue in Dirtmouth to fight Grey Prince Zote (a very difficult dream boss that scales with your nail upgrades). This is missable if you let Zote die during the first encounter.

  • #### The Collector
  • Boss in the Tower of Love: Accessible after defeating the Crystal Guardian and obtaining the Love Key. The boss drops the Collector’s Map (shows all remaining grubs). Not a secret but easily missed if you don't explore.
