Core Gameplay

Core Gameplay Guide for Hollow Knight

Overview of the Main Gameplay Loop

Hollow Knight's core gameplay loop is a continuous cycle of exploration, combat, and progression. You explore the interconnected world of Hallownest, fight enemies and bosses, collect resources (primarily Geo), and acquire upgrades (abilities, charms, nail upgrades) that unlock new areas and enhance your capabilities. The loop is non-linear: you choose which direction to explore, and failure (death) results in losing your Geo if you cannot return to your shade. The game emphasizes mastery of movement and combat mechanics, rewarding patience and observation.

Progression Tiers

#### Early Game (First Few Hours)
  • Areas Unlocked: Dirtmouth (hub), Forgotten Crossroads, and often Greenpath or the first part of the fungal wastes after obtaining the Mothwing Cloak.

  • Initial Abilities: Basic slash (nail), Focus (heal using Soul), and Vengeful Spirit (spell). No movement upgrades.

  • Combat System: Enemies are slow and predictable. Learn to time slashes, jump to avoid attacks, and use Focus safely. Parrying is not yet available. Example: The False Knight in Forgotten Crossroads teaches pattern recognition and avoiding falling debris.

  • Exploration: Linear at first but quickly opens. The first key upgrade is the Mothwing Cloak (dash) after beating Hornet in Greenpath, and the Mantis Claw (wall jump) in the Fungal Wastes. These allow vertical mobility and access to new areas.

  • Economy: Geo is scarce. Sell relics (like Wanderer's Journal) or grind small enemies. Important early purchases: Wayward Compass (shows position on map), Quill (draw map), and a Simple Key (opens first locked door). Cornifer sells maps for each area.

  • Quests/Missions: No formal quest log. Meet Zote (rescue from Vengefly King), Grubfather (rescue grubs for rewards), and Iselda (buy compass). The Seer gives the Dream Nail after collecting 300 Essence from dream warriors/roots.

  • Character/Build Growth: Gather Mask Shards (increase health) and Soul Vessels (increase Soul capacity). First nail upgrade from the Nailsmith using Geo and Pale Ore (early one in Forgotten Crossroads). Limited charm notches (2-3). Example build: Shaman Stone + Longnail for spell damage.

  • End of Early Game: Typically after defeating the Mantis Lords or Soul Master, obtaining the Desolate Dive spell and accessing deeper areas.

  • #### Mid Game (After First Upgrades)
  • Areas Unlocked: Greenpath (fully), Fungal Wastes, City of Tears, Howling Cliffs, Crystal Peak. Fast travel via Stag Stations becomes available.

  • New Abilities: Mantis Claw (wall jump), Mothwing Cloak (dash), Desolate Dive (damage and break floors), Dream Nail (gather Essence, read thoughts).

  • Combat System: Bosses are faster and require dashing through attacks (e.g., Soul Master's teleport slams). Nail upgrades to Channeled Nail (level 2) and Coiled Nail (level 3) increase damage. Spells can be upgraded to Shade Soul (from Shade Lord after acquiring 1800 Essence). Learn to use Dream Nail to gain extra Soul during fights.

  • Exploration: Non-linear with multiple branching paths. Stag Stations allow fast travel. Important items: Tram Pass (access tram system), King's Brand (later for accessing Abyss). Minor breakables with Geo.

  • Economy: Geo becomes more abundant via farming in City of Tears or Crystal Peak. Relic prices increase. Upgrade costs: Pale Ore needed for nail – first from Crystal Peak, second in Ancient Basin. Buy Lumafly Lantern (critical for dark areas like Crystal Peak and Deepnest).

  • Quests/Missions: Rescue Grubs (charm rewards). Start Grimm Troupe (if DLC, requires Dream Nail). Find Jiji (teleport to shade). Complete Warrior Dreams for Essence.

  • Character/Build Growth: Obtain Isma's Tear (acid swimming) and Monarch Wings (double jump) in mid-to-late mid game. Charm notches up to 8. Charms like Quick Slash, Mark of Pride (extend range), Spell Twister (reduce Soul cost) become available. Health masks: up to 7-8.

  • End of Mid Game: Reach Kingdom's Edge and defeat Hornet 2 to obtain the King's Brand, allowing access to the Abyss.

  • #### Late Game (After Second Half of Abilities)
  • Areas Unlocked: Deepnest, Kingdom's Edge, The Hive, Queen's Gardens, The Abyss, Royal Waterways (fully). Hidden areas like White Palace.

  • New Abilities: King's Brand (open doors), Void Heart (charms from Abyss – shape of Unn, etc.), Shade Cloak (shadow dash through enemies) after completing the Abyss Dream sequences. All Nail Arts learned from Nailmasters: Great Slash, Dash Slash, Cyclone Slash.

  • Combat System: Enemies are aggressive and require precise movement. Spells upgraded to Descending Dark (invincibility frames) and Abyss Shriek (massive damage). Bosses like Traitor Lord, The Collector test dodging and crowd control. Use Shadow Dash to phase through attacks.

  • Exploration: Nearly all map reveals. Use Dream Nail to enter boss dreams (e.g., Failed Champion, Lost Kin) for Essence and Pale Ore. The White Palace (platforming hell) yields the Void Heart charm and unlocks the Pantheons.

  • Economy: Geo is plentiful. Convert Fragile Charms to Unbreakable via Divine in the Grimm Troupe (cost 15000 Geo total for all three). Spend excess Geo on luxury items at Dirtmouth shops.

  • Quests/Missions: Complete the Grimm Troupe (Nightmare King optional). Free all Grubs (reward from Grubfather). Collect all Warrior Dreams for achievements. The Seer gives the Awakened Dream Nail after 2400 Essence.

  • Character/Build Growth: Max nail: Pure Nail (level 4) using final Pale Ore from Colosseum of Fools or deep in Kingdom's Edge. All charm notches (11 total) and overcharm possible. Health masks: 9. Soul vessels: 3 full. Powerful charm combos: Unbreakable Strength + Quick Slash + Mark of Pride for melee; Shaman Stone + Spell Twister + Soul Eater for spellcaster.

  • End of Late Game: Defeat The Hollow Knight (main story boss) in the Temple of the Black Egg. This ends the game, but you can continue exploring. Alternatively, proceed to Godhome for the true final challenge.

  • #### Endgame / Post-Game
  • After First Completion: The game does not lock you out after the Hollow Knight. You can load your save and keep playing. Goal is to unlock all optional content.

  • Combat/Content:

  • - Godhome (DLC): Fight bosses in sequential gauntlets (Pantheons). The final Pantheon (Pantheon of Hallownest) requires defeating every boss in order, including a new boss: Absolute Radiance. Bindings (restrict nail, charms, etc.) increase difficulty and reward lore.
    - Path of Pain (in White Palace): Extremely difficult platforming gauntlet leading to a lore cutscene.
    - Nightmare King Grimm (Grimm Troupe finale), Pure Vessel (dream boss), Sisters of Battle (Mantis Lords rematch), Void Idol, etc.
  • Exploration: Find all hidden areas: The Abyss (Void Heart), the Joni's Repose, Queen's Gardens secret rooms. Complete the Hunter's Journal (kill every enemy type).

  • Quests/Missions: Finish all Dream Bosses (required for 112% completion). Collect all Grubs (reward is Grubberfly's Elegy). Max out the Seer (essence > 2400). Complete the Delicate Flower quest (give to the grave in the Resting Grounds for a charm).

  • Economy: Geo becomes irrelevant for progression; use to buy vanity items from Dirtmouth (like mask shards from Sly's shop after upgrading his shop). Fragile charms can be upgraded to Unbreakable if not already.

  • Character/Build Growth: No further upgrades. Optimize charm loadouts for specific Pantheon fights. Overcharming (wearing more notches than limit) reduces health to 1 mask but allows extra charm – risky.

  • Endgame Structure: The ultimate goal is the Pantheon of Hallownest (112% completion) or the Embrace the Void ending (defeat Absolute Radiance). Achievements require completing all bindings in the Pantheons. The Colosseum of Fools provides combat challenges for Geo and a Pale Ore for the final nail upgrade if missed.

  • Key Systems Explained

  • Combat: Nail slash (hold to charge), spells (cost Soul), Nail Arts (learn from Nailmasters – charge and release). Dash and jump allow evasion. Focus heals 1 mask per Soul orb. Use Dream Nail on enemies to gain extra Soul.

  • Exploration: Map is unlocked by finding Cornifer. Use Wayward Compass and Quill to draw map. Stag Stations, Trams, and Dreamgate (after Awakened Dream Nail) for fast travel. Breakable walls and hidden paths are often hinted by cracks or suspicious geometry.

  • Economy: Geo dropped on death; can be recovered by defeating your shade. Bank in Fog Canyon (Millibelle) but she runs away with your Geo – optional. Relics sell to Lemm for high prices.

  • Progression: Nail upgrades (requires Pale Ore), spells (upgrade via Shade Lord), charms (collect from world or rewards), charm notches (from bosses and NPCs), mask shards and vessel fragments (from bosses or hidden caches). Upgrade at Nailsmith (nail), Seer (spells via essence), Salubra (charm notches), Divine (charm upgrades).

  • Tips for Effective Play

  • Always buy the Wayward Compass and map quill as soon as possible.

  • Farm Geo in City of Tears (Leapers) or Colosseum of Fools.

  • Use Dream Nail on bosses during staggers to refill Soul.

  • Prioritize health upgrades (mask shards) if struggling.

  • Experiment with charm combos; different bosses require different setups.
