Characters & Roles Guide for Pokémon Sword and Shield

1. Player Character (Victor / Gloria)



  • Background: The silent protagonist, a young Trainer from Postwick who dreams of becoming Champion. They receive a starter Pokémon from Professor Magnolia's assistant. Gender chosen at start.

  • Strengths: Customizable team; access to Dynamaxing; ability to capture any Pokémon. No fixed weaknesses.

  • Playstyle: Fully determined by player choice – can be offensive, defensive, or hybrid.

  • Unlock: Immediately at game start.

  • Recommended Equipment: Any held items (e.g., Choice Scarf, Leftovers). Use Exp. Share for early leveling.

  • Synergy: None – you are the central unit; build team synergy yourself.

    2. Hop (Rival)



  • Background: Your childhood friend and younger brother of Leon. Initially energetic and somewhat naive, he matures over the story. His starter is always weak to yours.

  • Strengths: Uses a balanced team with type variety; later fields a legendary (Zacian/Zamazenta depending on version).

  • Weaknesses: Often predicts wrong; his strategies are predictable. His team lacks coverage against certain types.

  • Weaknesses: Slow team; all are weak to Fire or Ground.

  • Unlock: Final battle at Energy Plant (post-Gym Challenge).

  • Kabu (Fire)


  • Pokémon: Ninetales, Arcanine, Centiskorch. Weak to Water, Rock, Ground.

  • Unlock: After Motostoke.


  • Bea (Fighting) – Sword / Allister (Ghost) – Shield


  • Bea uses Hitmontop, Pangoro, Machamp. Weak to Flying, Psychic, Fairy.

  • Allister uses Mimikyu, Cursola, Gengar. Weak to Ghost, Dark, Psychic.

  • Unlock: After Stow-on-Side.


  • Opal (Fairy)


  • Pokémon: Mawile, Togekiss, Alcremie. Weak to Poison, Steel.

  • Unlock: After Ballonlea.


  • Gordie (Rock) – Sword / Melony (Ice) – Shield


  • Gordie uses Barbaracle, Shuckle, Coalossal. Weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Steel.
