Warnings & Pitfalls

  • Rushing Your Town Hall Too Fast: Upgrading your Town Hall (TH) before maxing defenses, troops, and walls can cripple your progression. You'll face stronger opponents in matchmaking (based on TH level) while having weaker offensive/defensive capabilities. Aim to max (or near-max) each TH level before moving to the next, especially TH8, TH10, TH12, and TH14.

  • Spending Gems Frivolously: Gems are the premium currency. Do NOT use them to speed up timers or buy resources early on. Save gems for the 5th Builder (1,000 gems) and later for important magic items. Many players regret wasting gems on minor boosts.

  • Ignoring Laboratory Upgrades: Troop upgrades are just as important as defenses. A high-level army can overcome stronger bases; a weak army will struggle even against low-level bases. Prioritize your main attacking troops (e.g., Dragons, Hog Riders, Electro Dragons, etc.) based on your preferred attack strategy.

  • Not Joining a Clan Immediately: Clans provide significant benefits: clan castle reinforcements, clan games rewards, raid medals, and CWL medals. Staying solo slows progress dramatically. Join a beginner-friendly clan ASAP.

  • Neglecting Clan Castle: Always request troops and donate when possible. A full clan castle can turn the tide in defense and attack. Also, upgrade your clan castle each TH level to increase capacity.

  • Building Unnecessary Defenses Early: At low TH levels (1-6), focus on essential defenses (cannons, archer towers, mortars, air defenses, wizard towers). Avoid building superfluous walls or traps until you have a solid core. Use the "progress base" idea: keep your base compact and symmetrical for efficiency.

    Irreversible Choices

  • Town Hall Placement (in earlier versions): In the past, placing your Town Hall outside your base was a valid strategy to get shields. That mechanic has changed. Now, the Town Hall is a weapon after TH12, and its placement matters. However, rebuilding or moving a building costs resources (elixir/gold) but is not irreversible.

  • Spending Hero Books/ Hammers: Magic items (Books, Hammers) are powerful but scarce. Using a Book of Heroes on a low-level hero is wasteful. Save them for high-duration upgrades (e.g., level 40+ Archer Queen). This is not literally irreversible (you can't undo), but it's a regret point.

  • Selling or Removing Obstacles: Obstacles (trees, rocks) drop gems when removed. Some special obstacles (e.g., anniversary, Halloween) are limited-time and cannot be obtained again. Think twice before removing unique obstacles; you can box them in with decorations.

  • Transferring Accounts (Carefully): Linking to Supercell ID is safe. Unlinking and sharing accounts with strangers is risky. Once you transfer an account to another device/platform, you may lose progress if not properly linked back. This is technically reversible if you have Supercell ID, but account sharing violates ToS.

  • Purchasing the Gold Pass: While not irreversible (it’s a monthly purchase), the decision to spend real money cannot be reversed if you buy it and later regret it. Ensure you can complete the pass before buying.

    Missable Content

  • Special Obstacles: Every seasonal event (e.g., Christmas Tree, Halloween Cauldron, Birthday Cake) spawns a unique obstacle that can be collected once. If you remove it, it's gone forever. Many players later want them for decoration. Keep all special obstacles.

  • Limited-Time Troops and Spells: Supercell occasionally releases temporary troops (e.g., Ice Wizard, Skeleton Barrel, Headhunter) or spells (e.g., Clone Spell early access). These are often available only during events. If you don't unlock them during the event, you must wait for a future event or possible permanent addition.

  • Clan Games and Gold Pass Rewards: Some rewards (e.g., exclusive skins, magic items) are only available during specific months or seasons. Missing a Gold Pass month means losing that skin permanently (for now).

  • Builder Base Achievements: Some achievements (e.g., "Ride the Lightning") are time-gated or tied to specific events. They don't affect main village progression, but completionists will want them.

    Difficulty Spikes

  • Town Hall 7 to 8 Transition: Air defenses become critical; Dragons become available. Learning to attack with Dragons (or DragLoon) is essential. The base layout needs to handle both ground and air.

  • Town Hall 9: Introduction of the Archer Queen (level 1) and X-Bows. The jump from TH9 onward is significant because heroes leveling takes time. Attacks like Queen Walk and Hog Rider combos require practice.

  • Town Hall 10: Inferno Towers become multi-target or single-target. Players must design anti-inferno strategies (e.g., freeze spells, stone golem with witches). Learning to deal with multiple layers of splash damage is a spike.

  • Town Hall 11: Eagle Artillery forces long-range attack planning. Granite bases become common. The grind for hero levels (Queen 40-50, Warden 20) is a marathon.

  • Town Hall 12: Giga Tesla on the Town Hall makes endgame attacks complex. New siege machines require clan cooperation.

  • Legend League (5000+ trophies): Steep difficulty; every attack must be planned; revenge attacks are rare. You must manage your trophy count carefully.

    Grinding Traps

  • Resource Farming Overdependence: Farming resources is necessary, but mindlessly attacking dead bases all day burns out many players. Alternate between farming and pushing trophies. Use training potions efficiently.

  • Wall Grind: Walls are expensive (millions per piece). Many players get stuck on walls at TH11+. Don't neglect walls, but also don't sacrifice all loot for a few wall pieces. A balanced upgrade approach is better.

  • Hero Grind: Archer Queen and Barbarian King upgrades require dark elixir and take weeks each at high levels. This is the longest grind in the game. Use books and hammers strategically. Don't upgrade both heroes simultaneously unless you have multiple builders and dark elixir surplus.

  • Builder Base Neglect: The Builder Base offers extra gems, resources, and the sixth builder (via Otto Hut). Ignoring it completely slows down main base progress due to missing gem income. But over-grinding Builder Base can be a time sink. Aim for a moderate pace (get to Builder Hall 9, max certain items).

  • Clan Games Overcommitment: Completing Clan Games is beneficial, but don't spend all day doing low-reward tasks. Prioritize high-point challenges that match your playstyle.

    Online Etiquette & Anti-Cheat Notes

  • Donation Etiquette: When in a clan, request only what you need, and donate the same troops you request (e.g., if you ask for Dragons, donate Dragons when others request). Avoid requesting high-level troops and then donating low-level ones.

  • War Etiquette: Follow your clan's war rules (e.g., use both attacks, attack your mirror, follow the war plan). Do not use third-party software to scout enemy bases (e.g., mods) – that's cheating.

  • Chat Behavior: Be respectful. No racism, sexism, or harassment. Most clans have a minimum age and language expectations.

  • Anti-Cheat Systems: Supercell uses automated systems to detect cheating: botting, modding, account sharing, excessive device switching, or exploiting glitches. Penalties include: temporary bans, permanent bans, or leaderboard removal. Do not use any third-party tools that interact with the game (e.g., auto-attack bots, base copy tools that violate ToS). Even using a VPN to get regional event rewards can trigger a ban.

  • Account Security: Only link your account to Supercell ID. Never share your account credentials. Be wary of phishing scams (messages asking for your password or Supercell ID email). Supercell employees will never ask for your password.

  • Reporting Players: If you encounter a blatant bot (same attack pattern 24/7) or abusive chat, use the in-game report feature (tap profile → report). Do not engage in arguments with bots.

    Save Management & Account Advice

  • Supercell ID is Mandatory: Always link your game to a Supercell ID. This allows easy device transfer and account recovery. Without it, losing your device means losing all progress.

  • Multiple Accounts: You can have up to 10 Supercell ID accounts on one device. Each account is separate. Be careful not to switch accounts accidentally during a war attack.

  • Backup Codes: When you set up Supercell ID, note down the recovery codes or keep your email accessible. If you lose access to your email server, recovery becomes difficult.

  • Cloud Save (Google Play / Game Center): While Supercell ID is primary, also ensure cloud saves are enabled for your platform. This provides an extra layer.

  • Device Transfer: To move an account, open the game on the new device, tap "I already have a Supercell ID", log in, and the village will load. Do not unlink from the old device unnecessarily.

  • Account Trading is Prohibited: Buying or selling accounts violates ToS and can result in permanent bans. Never trade accounts with strangers.

Things Players Commonly Regret Not Knowing Earlier

1. The 5th Builder is the best gem investment. Many players waste gems on speeding up builds and regret it when they can't afford the 1,000-gem builder.
2. You can (and should) use the "Next" button to skip bases in multiplayer until you find one with good loot. Don't attack the first base and waste troops on a bad layout.
3. Builder base clock tower boost can be used strategically to time-resource collection. Many new players don't realize it speeds up resource production, not just upgrades.
4. The Season Bank (from Clan Games and Gold Pass) collects loot from attacks, which you then claim at season end. Many players forget to empty their bank before the season resets (it's automatically added, but you might miss if you had max storages).
5. You can cancel upgrades (though you only get 50% of resources back) if you change your mind. But don't cancel frequently – it's wasteful.
6. Freeze spell can be used on X-Bows, Infernos, and Eagle Artillery during their activation, pausing their effect. This is crucial for high-level attacks.
7. Walls are not as important as heroes and key defenses at early TH levels. Don't neglect walls, but prioritize other upgrades.
8. The Archer Queen's ability (Royal Cloak) makes her invisible and heals her. This can be used to avoid splash damage. Many new TH9 players don't use the ability effectively.
9. Siege machines (Wall Wrecker, Battle Blimp, Stone Slammer, Log Launcher) can be donated to your clan castle during war and multiplayer attacks. Always request them when possible.
10. Practicing in Friendly Challenges with clanmates allows you to test attacks without losing trophies. This is critical for learning new strategies.
