Characters & Roles in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley features a single playable character—the Farmer—but the world is populated by over 30 unique NPCs, each with their own personality, schedule, and relationships. This guide covers the Farmer's creation and skill paths, followed by every major NPC: the 12 marriage candidates and the most important non-marriage villagers.

1. The Farmer (Player Character)

#### Background & Customization
You inherit your grandfather's old farm in Stardew Valley. You can customize your appearance (gender, skin, hair, eyes, shirt, pants, accessories) and name. Your character has no spoken dialogue; actions are shown through emotes or tool use. You can later change your appearance at the Wizard's basement after completing a quest.

#### Skills & Professions
Your character progresses through five core skills (Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, Combat). Each skill reaches level 10 with two profession choices at levels 5 and 10. These define your playstyle:

  • Consumables: Food for energy/health buffs (e.g., Spicy Eel, Coffee for speed, Lucky Lunch).

  • Farm Setup: Optimize crops, animals, artisan machines based on chosen professions.

  • #### No Party System
Stardew Valley does not have a party or team synergy with NPCs during gameplay. However, marrying a spouse provides daily gifts, help on the farm (watering crops, feeding animals, repairing fences), and a 14-heart event. Other NPCs can become friends; high friendship unlocks recipes, cutscenes, and gifts in the mail.

Conclusion

Stardew Valley's character system revolves around building relationships with the 12 marriage candidates and other villagers to enrich your farm life. There are no combat or class roles; instead, your choice of skills (professions) defines your playstyle. Choose a spouse who fits your aesthetic and farming strategy, and befriend key NPCs for recipes, items, and heartwarming events. Remember: every character has a favorite gift, and cumulative friendship over time unlocks the full narrative tapestry of Pelican Town.
