Game Introduction

Overview

Gears 5 is a third-person tactical shooter developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the fifth main entry in the Gears of War series and serves as a direct sequel to Gears of War 4. The game launched on September 10, 2019 for Xbox One and Windows PC (via Microsoft Store, Xbox App, and Steam), and was later enhanced for the Xbox Series X|S generation. It is also available through Xbox Game Pass on both console and PC.

Story & Setting

The narrative takes place 25 years after the Locust War on the planet Sera. Humanity has rebuilt after the devastating conflict, but a new threat emerges: the Swarm, a terrifying hybrid race born from the remains of the Locust. The story follows Kait Diaz, a Gear from the Outsider settlement of New Hope, who is haunted by a mysterious connection to the Swarm and the Locust. As she uncovers the truth about her family’s past, she must prevent the Swarm from unleashing a catastrophic weapon.

The campaign spans diverse environments, from frozen mountain peaks and desert ruins to the infested ruins of Nexus and the ancient Tomb of the Unknown. Choices players make in key story moments affect the outcome of certain missions, offering replayability.

  • Escape mode – A roguelike-inspired PvE mode where players must coordinate to survive and escape, with permadeath-like stakes in higher difficulties.

  • Open-ended hub areas in the campaign (e.g., the frozen lake segment) that allow exploration and optional objectives, breaking from the linear corridor design of previous entries.

  • Superb cross-play integration between Xbox and PC, ensuring a healthy player base regardless of platform.

  • Stunning Unreal Engine 4 visuals with optional 60 FPS performance mode on Xbox Series X|S and high-end PC hardware.
