League of Legends Character Skills Guide

Introduction

In League of Legends, each champion has a unique kit of abilities (also called skills or spells) that define their playstyle. Every champion possesses:

  • Passive Ability (always active, no key)

  • Q Ability (key Q)

  • W Ability (key W)

  • E Ability (key E)

  • R Ability (ultimate, key R) – unlocked at levels 6, 11, and 16

  • Additionally, all players have access to Summoner Spells (two per match) and Runes that modify abilities. This guide covers the fundamentals of all champion skills, provides role-specific examples, and explains how to use, upgrade, and combo them effectively.

    ---

    Skill Categories and Mechanics

    #### Passive Ability
  • Effect: A permanent buff or triggered effect that requires no manual activation. Examples:

  • - Ashe: Basic attacks slow enemies.
    - Jinx: Gains attack speed after attacking champions/epic monsters.
  • No level-up required; it scales with champion level or item stats.

  • #### Active Abilities (Q, W, E, R)
    Each ability has:
  • Base damage / utility

  • Cooldown (reduced by Ability Haste items/runes)

  • Resource cost (mana, energy, rage, health, etc.)

  • Range, area of effect, projectile speed

  • Scaling (AD, AP, bonus health, etc.)

Leveling Up: You gain a skill point each level (100 max). The R ability can be upgraded at levels 6, 11, 16. Prioritize maxing one ability (usually Q or the primary damage ability) first, then secondary, then the least important. Exceptions exist (e.g., some supports max W first).

Cooldown and Ability Haste: Cooldown reduction has been replaced by Ability Haste (AH). Every 10 AH ≈ 9% cooldown reduction. AH multiplies the base cooldown: `New CD = Base CD * (100 / (100 + AH))`.

#### Ultimate Ability (R)
The most powerful skill, with a long cooldown. Often game-changing (e.g., global teleport, team-wide heal, massive AOE). Upgrading it reduces cooldown and increases damage/utility.

Upgrading Abilities: Leveling Order and Rune Synergies

  • Level 1: Take the ability that gives you the strongest level 1 trade or camp clear (e.g., Q for most champs, but some take W or E).

  • Level 2-3: Pick up the other two abilities to enable your combo.

  • Max order: Usually max main damage ability first, secondary utility, then the least impactful. Check champion-specific guides for exceptions.

  • Runes: Keystone runes often modify ability usage:
  • Electrocute (Domination) – burst combo.

  • Conqueror (Precision) – sustained damage.

  • Phase Rush (Sorcery) – kiting.

  • Aftershock (Resolve) – engage tanks.

  • Rune shards can give additional ability haste, damage, or survivability.

    ---

    Combos and Synergies

    #### Basic Combo Structure
    1. CC into damage: Hard cc (stun, root) guarantees follow-up damage.
    2. Setup: Use ability that marks, slows, or pulls.
    3. Execution: Primary damage ability, auto attacks, ultimate.

    Team Synergy Examples:
  • Amumu + Miss Fortune: Amumu R roots -> MF R deals massive AOE.

  • Orianna + Malphite: Orianna puts ball on Malphite -> Malphite R knocks up whole team -> Orianna R pulls them back.

  • Yuumi + any assassin: Yuumi attaches to a fed Zed or Talon, providing speed boost and extra damage/heals.

  • #### Self-Synergy Mechanics
    Many champions have ability interactions:
  • Riven: Her passive boosts auto attacks after each ability cast; cancel animations with Q and W for faster damage.

  • Ezreal: His Q applies on-hit effects and reduces all cooldowns by 1.5 seconds, so stacking items like Iceborn Gauntlet and Manamune is key.

  • ---

When to Use Each Skill: Situational Tips

  • Poke abilities (e.g., Lux E, Xerath Q): Use to harass in lane, but save mana for all-in.

  • Escape abilities (e.g., Ezreal E, Tristana W): Hold until you see enemy cc or close-range threat.

  • Global ultimates (e.g., Gangplank R, Jinx R, Ashe R): Use to help other lanes, secure objectives, or start fights from distance.

  • Channeled abilities (e.g., Katarina R, Nunu R): Only use after enemy crowd control is spent.

  • Self-peel (e.g., Janna Q, Lulu W): Save for when divers jump on your carry.

  • ---

    Recommended Builds and Item Synergies

Builds are champion-specific, but general rules:
  • Mages: Ability Haste, Magic Penetration, AP scaling. Items: Luden's, Liandry's, Zhonya's.

  • Assassins: Lethality, AD, Ability Haste. Items: Eclipse, Duskblade, Prowler's Claw.

  • ADCs: Attack Speed, Crit, On-hit. Items: Kraken Slayer, Infinity Edge, Runaan's.

  • Tanks: Health, Armor, Magic Resist, CDR. Items: Sunfire, Frostfire, Thornmail, Force of Nature.

  • Supports: Enchanter: Heal/Shield Power, Ability Haste. Items: Moonstone, Redemption. Tank: Locket, Knight's Vow.

Ability cooldowns and mana costs influence item choices: high mana champs often buy Tear items like Manamune or Archangel's Staff.
