Characters & Roles

Characters & Roles

Overview

League of Legends (LoL) features over 160 unique champions, each with distinct playstyles, abilities, and roles. Champions are categorized by their position (lane) in the standard 5v5 game and by their class (combat archetype). This guide covers every major role and class, including representative champion examples, strengths, weaknesses, playstyle, unlock conditions, recommended builds, and team synergy.

Roles (Positions)

Each role corresponds to a lane or specific map responsibility.

#### 1. Top Lane
  • Description: The island lane (top side) typically played by durable melee champions who can survive alone and later split-push or frontline.

  • Champion Examples: Garen, Darius, Camille, Ornn, Fiora, Kennen, Aatrox, Shen.

  • Strengths: High durability, good sustain, strong dueling; can become unkillable or deal massive damage if fed.

  • Weaknesses: Vulnerable to ganks if pushed; many top laners lack mobility and can be kited; weak early versus ranged.

  • Playstyle: Farm safely early, trade when abilities are off cooldown, manage wave control, teleport to help other lanes, split-push in mid-late game or group for teamfights are typical.

  • Unlock Conditions: All top lane champions can be purchased with Blue Essence (BE) (earned by playing) or Riot Points (RP) (premium currency). New champions cost 7800 BE for the first two weeks, then drop to 6300 BE, and eventually to 1350 BE. Free weekly rotation includes 10–15 champions across all roles.

  • Recommended Items (General): Tank top: Sunfire Aegis, Thornmail, Spirit Visage. Bruiser top: Stridebreaker, Black Cleaver, Sterak's Gage. AP top: Riftmaker, Demonic Embrace.

  • Team Synergy: Pairs well with engage supports and high-damage junglers. A split-pushing top laner draws pressure while team takes objectives elsewhere. Tank tops provide peel and engage.

  • #### 2. Jungle
  • Description: Roaming role that clears monster camps in the jungle, secures neutral objectives (Dragon, Baron, Rift Herald), and ganks lanes to create advantages. No lane farming.

  • Champion Examples: Lee Sin, Elise, Vi, Kha'Zix, Amumu, Master Yi, Graves, Hecarim.

  • Strengths: Map presence, objective control, surprise ganks, snowball potential.

  • Weaknesses: Can fall behind if counter-jungled or if ganks fail; reliant on lanes to follow up; vulnerable to invaders early.

  • Playstyle: Efficient camp clearing, track enemy jungler, choose gank angles, set up vision, secure scuttles, and coordinate neutral objectives. Junglers take the Smite summoner spell.

  • Unlock Conditions: Same as all champions. The role itself is available from account level 10 (ranked requires level 30 and 20 champions owned).

  • Recommended Items: Standard mythic: Trinity Force (AD fighters), Sunfire Aegis (tanks), Night Harvester (AP assassins). Build jungle item (now replaced by standard mythics without dedicated jungle item) and always upgrade Smite to red or blue smite.

  • Team Synergy: Jungle is the primary playmaker. Strong synergy with laners who have crowd control (CC) to secure ganks. A tank jungler pairs well with immobile carries; a carry jungler needs peel from supports.

  • #### 3. Mid Lane
  • Description: Center of the map, often mages, assassins, or skirmishers. Mid laners have access to both side lanes and objectives.

  • Champion Examples: Ahri, Yasuo, Orianna, Zed, Lux, Syndra, LeBlanc, Galio.

  • Strengths: High burst damage, wave clear, roaming potential; can easily influence other lanes.

  • Weaknesses: Squishy (mages and assassins), vulnerable to CC and ganks; some champions have poor wave clear early.

  • Playstyle: Secure farm, control lane priority, look for roams to top or bot, assist jungler on scuttles, provide damage in teamfights; assassins focus on picking off squishies.

  • Unlock Conditions: Same as above.

  • Recommended Items: Mages: Luden's Tempest, Seraph's Embrace, Zhonya's Hourglass. Assassins: Duskblade of Draktharr (AD), Hextech Rocketbelt (AP). Skirmishers: Yone – Immortal Shieldbow.

  • Team Synergy: Mid works well with jungler for 2v2 skirmishes. Control mages require peel; assassins need engage from support or top to distract enemies. A roaming mid can help bot lane snowball.

  • #### 4. Bottom Lane – ADC (Attack Damage Carry)
  • Description: Two players on bot lane: the carry (ADC) and support. ADC deals sustained physical damage from range, scales with items.

  • Champion Examples: Jinx, Kai'Sa, Ashe, Vayne, Jhin, Miss Fortune, Ezreal, Aphelios.

  • Strengths: Highest late-game consistent damage, tower pushing, objective shredding.

  • Weaknesses: Extremely squishy, immobile (except few), requires protection and gold to scale; weak early game.

  • Playstyle: Farm safely, harass with auto attacks and abilities, avoid getting caught, attack from the backline in teamfights, kite enemies. ADC takes Flash and Heal typically.

  • Unlock Conditions: Same.

  • Recommended Items: Mythic: Kraken Slayer (extra damage vs tanks), Galeforce (mobility), Immortal Shieldbow (defense). Legendary: Infinity Edge, Phantom Dancer, Lord Dominik's Regards. Build boots: Berserker's Greaves.

  • Team Synergy: ADC needs a support to peel (e.g., Lulu, Thresh) or engage (Leona) to set up kills. Tanks and frontliners protect ADC; mages can provide area control. The support's job is to keep ADC alive and enable damage.

  • #### 5. Support
  • Description: Bot lane partner of ADC. Supports provide utility: healing, shielding, crowd control, vision, and engage or disengage. They do not farm minions (except with relic shield).

  • Champion Examples: Thresh, Leona, Lulu, Janna, Nami, Blitzcrank, Pyke, Yuumi.

  • Strengths: Enable teammates, control vision, set up kills, peel for carries.

  • Weaknesses: Low damage (except some), squishy if caught out, gold income limited (rely on support item gold generation).

  • Playstyle: Roam for vision control, ward objectives, protect ADC in lane, look for engages (hook supports) or sustain (enchanters), track enemy jungler, coordinate with team. Support item upgrades provide wards.

  • Unlock Conditions: Same.

  • Recommended Items: Support mythic: Shurelya's Battlesong (speed), Locket of the Iron Solari (shield), Moonstone Renewer (healing). Legendary: Zeke's Convergence, Knight's Vow, Redemption. Control Wards always.

  • Team Synergy: Synergy between support and ADC is critical. An engage support (Leona) works well with aggressive ADCs (Draven). An enchanter (Lulu) protects hypercarries (Kog'Maw). Supports also enable jungler invades and roams.

  • Champion Classes (Archetypes)

Beyond lane positions, champions are further classified by their combat style. A champion may belong to multiple classes.

    #### Tank
  • Role: Absorb damage, initiate fights, provide CC.

  • Examples: Malphite, Leona, Ornn, Sion, Maokai, Rammus.

  • Strengths: Very durable, hard CC, can engage or peel.

  • Weaknesses: Low damage, reliant on teammates for kills, can be kited.

  • Playstyle: Frontline, use CC to lock down key targets, soak abilities.

  • Items: Sunfire Aegis, Thornmail, Force of Nature, Gargoyle Stoneplate.

  • Synergy: Works well with dive champions (assassins) and carries that need peel.

  • #### Fighter (Bruiser)
  • Role: Melee damage dealer with moderate durability. Duelists or divers.

  • Examples: Darius, Aatrox, Jax, Fiora, Riven, Irelia, Sett.

  • Strengths: High sustained damage, strong dueling, can split-push.

  • Weaknesses: Can be bursted if not ahead, kited by mobile opponents.

  • Playstyle: Jump on enemy backline, sustain with lifesteal, outplay with mobility.

  • Items: Stridebreaker, Divine Sunderer, Black Cleaver, Sterak's Gage.

  • Synergy: Need engage from support/tank; pair with healer for dive.

  • #### Mage
  • Role: Ability-based damage, often AOE or burst.

  • Examples: Syndra, Orianna, Viktor, Veigar, Lux, Anivia, Ziggs.

  • Strengths: Wave clear, poke, zone control, high burst.

  • Weaknesses: Squishy, skillshot-dependent, vulnerable to assassins.

  • Playstyle: Stay at range, combo spells, control zone, provide CC.

  • Items: Luden's Tempest, Liandry's Anguish, Zhonya's Hourglass, Rabadon's Deathcap.

  • Synergy: Need peel from tanks/supports; work well with engage (place spells on locked down enemies).

  • #### Assassin
  • Role: High mobility, burst damage, pick off isolated squishies.

  • Examples: Zed, Talon, Katarina, Akali, LeBlanc, Kha'Zix (also jungle).

  • Strengths: Incredible burst, snowball potential, outplay mobility.

  • Weaknesses: Very squishy, no sustained damage, countered by hard CC and Zhonya's.

  • Playstyle: Roam, flank, delete carries, reset if possible (Katarina).

  • Items: AD: Prowler's Claw, Duskblade, Youmuu's Ghostblade. AP: Hextech Rocketbelt, Lich Bane.

  • Synergy: Need distraction from tanks; good with engage supports (Thresh, Leona) to isolate targets.

  • #### Marksman (ADC)
  • Role: Ranged auto-attack-based damage dealer. Already covered under Bot Lane role.

  • Examples: Jinx, Caitlyn, Vayne, Ashe, Kai'Sa, Ezreal.

  • Strengths/Weaknesses: See ADC role.

  • Items: Kraken Slayer, Infinity Edge, Runaan's Hurricane.

  • #### Enchanter
  • Role: Healing, shielding, buffing allies; usually support.

  • Examples: Lulu, Soraka, Sona, Janna, Yuumi, Nami, Seraphine.

  • Strengths: Sustain, peel, speed boosts, can turn fights.

  • Weaknesses: Squishy, low burst, reliant on teammates.

  • Playstyle: Stay behind allies, use abilities to heal/shield, CC enemies if possible.

  • Items: Moonstone Renewer, Redemption, Ardent Censer, Staff of Flowing Water.

  • Synergy: Ideal with hypercarries (Kog'Maw, Jinx) that benefit from attack speed or damage boosts.

  • #### Catcher (Hook/Engage Support)
  • Role: Initiate fights with CC hooks or binds, pick enemies.

  • Examples: Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke, Morgana, Lux (also mage).

  • Strengths: High pick potential, area denial (Thresh lantern), vision control.

  • Weaknesses: Missed abilities = long cooldown, can be punished when abilities down.

  • Playstyle: Look for hooks, pressure lane, roam with jungler.

  • Items: Shurelya's Battlesong, Zeke's Convergence, Knight's Vow.

  • Synergy: Works with burst ADCs (Draven, Jhin) who can follow up quickly. Good with junglers that have follow-up CC.

  • #### Specialist (Unique)
  • Role: Champions with very unique mechanics that don't fit neatly elsewhere.

  • Examples: Teemo (shroom stealth, DOT), Singed (run around, poison), Heimerdinger (turrets), Ivern (jungle with unique camps), Bard (collect chimes, tunnel).

  • Strengths: Unpredictable, can counter many matchups with bizarre strategies.

  • Weaknesses: Often weaker in standard team composition, niche.

  • Playstyle: Highly dependent on champion; often split-pushing or area denial.

  • Items: Varies widely.

  • Synergy: Difficult to generalize; often require team to play around them.

  • Unlocking Champions

  • Blue Essence (BE): Earned by leveling up, disenchanting champion shards, or missions. Used to permanently unlock champions. Costs: Newest champions = 7800 BE, reduced to 6300 BE after two weeks, then 4800, 3150, 1350, 450 BE in later patches.

  • Riot Points (RP): Premium currency bought with real money. Can instantly unlock any champion.

  • Loot & Shards: Champion shards from hextech chests can be permanently unlocked with BE or turned into blue essence.

  • Free Rotation: 10-15 champions change weekly; playable for free during the week.

  • Event Passes: Sometimes provide champion unlock tokens.

  • Recommended Builds (General Tips)

  • Build role-appropriate mythic item first (or mythic component).

  • Adapt to enemy team: Build armor vs AD, magic resist vs AP.

  • Include a Guardian Angel/Zhonya's if you're a carry getting focused.

  • Supports: Build support item (Spellthief's, Relic Shield) and then mythic, boots, control wards.

  • Always buy boots (almost all champions need Tier 2 boots, usually Lucidity, Sorcerer's, Berserker's, or Plated Steelcaps).

  • For ADCs: Infinity Edge is core after mythic.

  • For AP mages: Void Staff or Morellonomicon as needed.

  • Team Synergy (Overall)

  • Balanced team composition includes: 1 Tank (or 2), 1-2 Damage Carries, 1 Support, 1 Controller (mage or assassin).

  • Example comp: Top tank (Ornn), Jungle fighter (Lee Sin), Mid control mage (Orianna), ADC hypercarry (Jinx), Support enchanter (Lulu).

  • Synergy strategies:

- Protect the ADC: Lulu + Kog'Maw combo.
-
Pick comp: Blitzcrank + Elise to grab and burst.
-
Teamfight AOE: Malphite + Orianna + Miss Fortune ult combos.
-
Map pressure:** Split-push with Fiora + teleport, rest of team holds.
